For many people the book Consciousness beyond Life, The Science of the Near-Death Experience radically changed their views on life and death. The book is the result of 20 years of ground-breaking scientific research into the experiences of people who were clinically dead, so-called Near-Death Experiences, or NDEs.
In the film Consciousness beyond Life we explore the transforming character of NDEs through the testimony of four very different people. Although each person has had a unique experience, there are many similarities: they seem to have lost their fear of death, are less interested in appearances and material affairs, feel at one with nature and very often develop a highly intuitive ability to heal.
These personal and often emotional stories are given context through discussions with a number of leading thinkers in this field. One is Carlo Leget, a bio-ethicist who has written extensively on ethical issues surrounding death and dying. Reinier Tilanus, who as a practicing Tibetan Buddhist sees much in common between Van Lommel's views on consciousness and those of the traditional Buddhist masters. Raymond Moody, the pioneering philosopher and psychologist who brought NDEs to public attention in 1975 with the publication of his bestseller ‘Life After Death’. And of course Pim van Lommel himself with his challenge to look with new eyes at the phenomenon of consciousness itself.
Director Mark Verkerk (Buddha's Lost Children) explores the meaning and relevance of NDEs using as starting point Van Lommel’s statement:
"If you reduce science to the materialistic, you automatically exclude consciousness, because consciousness can’t be measured. I can never prove scientifically that somebody is in love or is moved by a painting. And yet these are at the very core of humankind’s reality. That’s why I propose a new kind of science, one that also allows for subjective elements.
