The Practice of the Wild traces writer Gary Snyder’s long and multifaceted career, from his poetry to his years studying as a Zen monk, to the work he has done advocating for the environment and for preserving, as far as is possible, what is left of the natural wildness of the Western landscape. All this is explored by way of his long friendship with Jim Harrison (best known as a novelist and screenwriter.) Snyder has been a creative force in the major cultural changes that have created the modern world. Along with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, he was a central figure of the Beat generation. Harrison and Snyder are both deeply in tune with the natural world and with the rhythms of the landscapes they have chosen to make their homes.
They while taking a wilderness trek along the stunning wild country of Big Sur. They debate the pros and cons of everything from Google to Zen koans.
