Into the Current: Burma's Political Prisoners

In this film unique archival images show the courage of those whose intransigent resistance to the regime still gives hope, despite decades of continuing dictatorship. Leading human rights activist Bo Kyi describes the efforts of generations of Burmese to free the land of tyranny. Bo Kyi has received prestigious international awards, including the International Human Rights Defender Award and the Elaine des Forges Award.

As far back as 1988, he stood with the students who actively headed demonstrations against the military regime in Burma. After an armed crackdown by the military junta, which left more than three thousand unarmed people dead, he spent seven years in prison. Subsequently he succeeded in escaping across the border to Thailand, where he now supports hundreds of colleagues from the ranks of political prisoners, their families and other Burmese activists.

The film shows images of the Democratic Voice of Burma, anti-government protests and performances by the comedian Zarganar, whose political satire brought him multiple times in prison.
